Does Dollar Tree Sell Chalk Paint?

Chalk paint is popular for furniture upcycling. It is beginner-friendly and makes furniture look stylish when done well. However, it isn’t nearly as accessible as other paints (such as water-based paints like latex and enamel). And it can sometimes be more expensive too.

So, is there a cheaper option for beginners available in common variety stores like Dollar Tree and Walmart?

Is there a Dollar Tree chalk paint? In this post, we’ll look into where you can buy chalk paint for cheap and how you can make it yourself.

Does Dollar Tree sell chalk paint?

Unfortunately, Dollar Tree doesn’t sell chalk paint.

This variety store carries a lot of different art materials. But as of now, they don’t have any types of chalk paint available in the store.

However, Dollar Tree does sell acrylic paints. And you can easily turn any acrylic paint, including the ones sold from this store, into homemade chalk paint with our DIY recipe.

How to make chalk paint with Dollar Tree paint?

Making your homemade Dollar Tree chalk paint from acrylic paint is an easy DIY project. It takes only a few ingredients and tools. And it takes about five minutes to put together.

Note that the recipe we’ll share yields a small batch only, perfect for craft projects. You will need to make more if painting over large furniture or surfaces.

So, if you’re ready to create your chalk paint, continue reading below.

Tools and supplies

We recommend getting all your tools and supplies ready before your DIY chalk paint project. This way, everything will be within easy reach as you mix your ingredients.

For this project, you’ll need:

  • Any color of acrylic paint (Dollar Tree offers a limited selection for a low price)
  • Calcium carbonate powder (chalk powder)
  • Cool water
  • Mixing bowl (choose the size depending on how much paint you plan to make)
  • Stirring stick
  • Measuring spoon and cup

There are different alternatives to calcium carbonate for making chalk paint, like plaster of Paris and unsanded grout. However, these substitutes often mix better with latex paint rather than acrylic paint.

Step 1: Mix water and calcium carbonate

Measure your calcium carbonate. Use 2 tablespoons of sodium carbonate to 1 cup of acrylic paint. You can alter this ratio based on your preference, but as a start, always adhere to this general ratio.

Put the measured amount of chalk powder in your mixing bowl, then add a tablespoon of cool water. Mix these two ingredients until you’ve reached a smooth mixture.

Step 2: Measure the paint

Prepare your acrylic paint. Use the measuring cup to get the exact amount of acrylic paint you need. This is important because there is a specific ratio for acrylic paint to sodium carbonate.

Once you’ve decided how much paint you’ll need, add it to the chalk powder. For this post, we’ll use a cup of acrylic paint as a reference for the rest of the article.

Step 3: Mix the acrylic paint and sodium carbonate

Get a stirrer and start mixing the two components together. You’ll need to ensure that the chalk powder is evenly distributed in your paint.

Continue stirring until you reach a smooth consistency.

Step 4: Test your paint

Check the consistency of your paint by applying it on a surface similar to your final project (i.e., scrap wood if painting over wood furniture).

If you want it to be thicker, add a little more calcium carbonate powder. However, do this in small increments, as too much calcium carbonate will make it harder to distress your paint.

On the other hand, if you want the paint to be thinner, add more water.

Make sure you mix the paint properly when you add these two ingredients. Once you’ve reached your desired consistency, you can start using homemade chalk paint for your project.

Where to buy chalk paint?

Chalk paint is a great medium to use for many DIY projects. But it can be hard to acquire as it is more commonly sold in specialty stores and not in hardware stores.

Lowe’s and Home Depot don’t carry the popular Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan, Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral Paint, or Silk Paint. These brands are only available online via their respective websites or in limited colors on Amazon. However, you can also visit their sites online to get more information about specialty stores in your state that sell them.

But these large hardware stores still have some chalky-matte paint brands that you can try. These include:

  • Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines’ Chalk Style Paint
  • Krylon’s Chalky Finish Tintable Paint
  • Rust-Oleum’s Chalked Paint.

If you want more options, you can always check Amazon. However, note that many DIYers argue that generally the most reputable chalk paint brands can typically only be purchased directly from manufacturers or specialty paint stores.
